Drugs of choice, route of administration, and duration of therapy are based on susceptibility of the organism, site of infection, host, and clinical response. Multidrug-resistant isolates of Salmonella Typhi and Paratyphi A (exhibiting resistance to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, and trimethoprimsulfamethoxazole) and strains with decreased susceptibility to fluoroquinolones are common in South and Southeast Asia and are increasingly found in travelers to areas with endemic infection.
